How to Choose Shampoo for Bleached Hair: How Often to Use Purple Shampoo

As color fades from bleached or high-tone hair, yellow and orange tones tend to appear, and hair tends to feel squeaky. This article covers home care for bleached hair in three parts: purple shampoo, how to use it, and leave-in treatment.

What is purple shampoo?

A shampoo containing purple pigment, called "murashan" in Japan (from murasaki, purple, and shampoo). Purple is the complementary color of yellow, so it is used to make yellow tones less noticeable.

How to use and how often

The amount, leave-on time and frequency differ by product, so follow each product's directions.

  • Somaruka (PURPLE): to reduce yellowing, leave the lather on for a few minutes before rinsing. As a guide, use once every 3 days to maintain color, or daily when color has faded.
  • Somaruka (ASH): leave on for a few minutes before rinsing. As a guide, use once or twice every 3 days to maintain color, or daily when fading bothers you.
  • Bain Ultra-Violet (purple pigment): rinse off right after lathering.
  • No.5P: after shampooing, leave on for at least 1–3 minutes and rinse. Pigment may stain your hands, so wearing gloves is recommended.

Leave-in treatment for manageability

Bleached hair tends to tangle at the ends and frizz. MILBON's ELUJUDA Bleach Care is a leave-in treatment line for bleached hair.

For special care once or twice a week, there is also OLAPLEX No.3 Hair Perfector, used before shampoo.

Daily tips

  • Detangle with a wide-tooth comb before washing
  • Wash with water that isn't too hot
  • Dry right after washing. Before using an iron, apply a heat-protecting leave-in treatment
