Wax vs Balm vs Grease vs Gel: Choosing Men's Styling Products
Even among styling products labeled "hard," the way they add shine and their texture when applied differ. Here we summarize the differences by type and how to choose, using salon-exclusive ARIMINO MEN as an example.
Differences by type (quick chart)

| Type | Texture and shine | Hairstyles it suits | Example we carry |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wax | Easy to spread by hand and easy to reapply | Short hair with movement at the ends, tousled defined pieces | SPICE Sisters Freeze Wax |
| Balm | Oils that melt at body temperature. Natural shine and light defined pieces | Rough styles for short to medium hair | ARIMINO MEN Hard Balm |
| Grease | Wet-look shine. Easy to keep sleek | Tight styles such as side parts and slicked-back hair | ARIMINO MEN Freeze Keep Grease |
| Gel | Hardens as it dries. Shine and a wet texture | Styles where you want to fix the shape firmly | ARIMINO MEN Freeze Keep Gel |
| Milk | Spreads well and is easy to apply down to the ends | Longer hair, perms | ARIMINO MEN Hard Milk |
| Spray | Fixes the shape at the end | Humid or windy days | ARIMINO MEN Hard Spray |
Textures are general tendencies for each type. Please check the official information below for each product's features.
The 5 ARIMINO MEN items (official features)
All 5 items share a citrus musk scent, so the scents match even when you layer them.
- Hard Balm (60g): contains 97% naturally derived ingredients. It melts easily at skin temperature and spreads well, keeping movement in short to medium hair while adding natural shine and lightness. For dry hair.
- Hard Milk (100g): milky, spreads well down to the ends, with moderate defined pieces and a wet look. A "slow-drying formula" whose hold builds over time, easy to apply even on longer hair. For dry hair.
- Freeze Keep Grease (100g): a formula combining the workability of wax with the shine of grease. Hard hold without crunchiness keeps tight styles all day. For half-dry to dry hair.
- Freeze Keep Gel (200g): does not harden immediately and is not sticky. A "hybrid formula" combining the workability of wax with the easy rinse-out and hold of gel. For half-wet to dry hair.
- Hard Spray (160g): a soft, light mist that keeps styles hard even on humid or windy days. Spray over all the hair with the can held upright, then shape by hand.
Basic application
- Spread an appropriate amount well on your palms
- Work it in while applying, matching the hair condition for each product (dry hair, half-dry and so on)
- Once the shape is set, fix it with spray if needed
