Choosing by hair concern

Choosing by scalp

If you want to focus on scalp care, Emissary; if your skin is sensitive and irritation is a concern, Natural. Natural is a shampoo that can be used all over the body; when using it on the body, the maker instructs you to take it on a towel soaked in warm water or a body sponge and lather it well before use. For a refreshing feel in summer or sweaty seasons, choose Cool. Scalp condition changes with the seasons, so switching, for example Cool in summer and Emissary in winter, is one approach.

Matching treatments

The treatments also come in 5 types with the same names as the shampoos. All 5 are used the same way: after shampooing, lightly remove moisture, work in an appropriate amount and rinse. The maker recommends leaving it on for 5 minutes.

You can choose the shampoo and treatment each for its own purpose. One way is to choose them separately, such as the Emissary shampoo for your scalp and the Platinum treatment for the color at your ends. During the 5 minutes, check that the treatment is worked into the ends and mid-lengths rather than the scalp.

For the week after coloring: Platinum Plus

Platinum Plus is a cream shampoo and treatment used in the week after hair coloring. The maker describes the cream shampoo as "shampoo care that conditions in 1 week" and the treatment as "cuticle care done in the week after hair coloring."

The cream shampoo is distinctive in that you use it without lathering first. After pre-rinsing, spread it from roots to ends in several portions, and lather by massaging it through all your hair. If the lather is weak, add warm water. The maker's guideline amounts are 2.5 cherries' worth for short hair, 4 for medium and 5.5 for long. For the treatment, lightly remove moisture after shampooing, work it in, leave for 5 minutes and rinse. If you have one of each ready on the day you get your color done at the salon, you can start using them that same day without hesitation.

The "two washes" the maker recommends

For all 5, the steps are to first rinse thoroughly with warm water to remove sebum and styling products, then make a good lather and wash gently with the pads of your fingers. In its directions, the maker recommends washing twice: the first wash removes styling products and dust left in the hair, and the second removes dirt from the scalp. Even if the first wash doesn't lather well, don't add too much product; rinse it off quickly and make a good lather on the second wash to use less.
